TOPICAL OVERVIEW (with links)

A. Technical Requirements

What browser do I need to view the Contexticon® website?
The Contexticon website has been optimized for the latest versions of Firefox, Safari and Internet Explorer. To properly view the site you'll need to use one of the following browsers:

Firefox 3.0 or better - download the latest Firefox
Safari 3.0 or better - download the latest Safari
Internet Explorer 7 or better - download the latest Internet Explorer

What else do I need?
The Contexticon requires version 9 or higher of the Adobe Flash Player. If you do not have Flash installed, or have an older version of Flash, you will need to install or upgrade your Flash Player in order to use the site. Download Flash now.

Certain portions of the site also require that you have Javascript enabled in your browser.

B. General Set-Up

The Welcome screen gives me the option of exploring the Contexticon by either a New Testament term or passage. Once I have selected one of these two pathways to begin my tour, can I access Contexticon exhibits by other pathways?
Yes, you can switch pathways at any time. If you have entered the Contexticon through a New Testament term and wish to explore a passage instead, simply select that passage by using the Change Book function in the New Testament frame. If you have entered the Contexticon through a New Testament passage and wish to explore a specific term instead, you have two options. If the term you wish to explore appears within the selected passage, simply click on the highlighted term. The treatment of that term will appear in the Interactive Tours frame. If you wish to explore a term that does not appear in the passage you selected, you can always choose any term from the Current Term Group menu in the upper left of your screen.

How can I increase or decrease the size of the text or font?
In the upper-right-hand corner of the Contexticon screen, clicking on any of the three font sizes displayed as “Aa” after the header “Text Size” will adjust the font size accordingly.

C. Contexticon Content Display

When I am working in Broad Context and move the cursor to the left so that it is over the Range of Usage, only part of the Range of Usage frame is visible. Is this a malfunction?
No, the program is operating correctly. Moving the cursor over the Range of Usage reveals the left-hand side of that frame to provide a quick reminder of the usage categories. To open the Range of Usage while you are in Broad Context, click onto the Range of Usage tab (which may have already expanded to reveal part of the Range of Usage).

Sometimes images disappear from the screen when I am looking at the Broad Context, Spotlights, or Resources Tabs. How can I get them to re-appear?
This is a common bug; the image will re-appear if you move the scroll bar.

When I select a term from the “Current Term Group” dropdown, sometimes nothing appears in the INTERACTIVE TOURS panel. What should I do?
This occurs if the Contexticon has not fully finished loading when the term is selected. Use the CURRENT TERM GROUP menu to select another term, and when that term appears, use the CURRENT TERM GROUP menu to select the originally-desired term. It should then appear.

D. Copy & Paste Functions

Is it possible to copy, paste, and print Contexticon materials?
It is indeed possible to copy and paste materials found in both of the two main "term tours" provided by the Contexticon, though with some limitations partly due to the (otherwise helpful) use of Flash in Contexticon design. In Broad Context, copy/paste works quite normally. Text can be highlighted, copied and pasted into a document, then shared or printed as desired. Photos cannot be copied for reasons of owner copyright.

For the Range Screen, it is also possible to copy and paste, albeit with more steps. The Contexticon user first calls up a view of the full Range Screen by clicking the button labeled "Full Range" (located just above the title "Range of Usage). Each category of term usage appear, along with related subcategories, can be highlighted and pasted into a document, albeit only one category at a time. Again, this limitation relates to Flash encoding. The project aspires to simplifying this procedure in the future.
